Differential on a DAF XF 430: repairing pinion shaft play and oil leak

A customer from the Schweinfurt area brought us a DAF XF 430 with play on the pinion shaft of the rear axle differential. The pinion shaft seal was also damaged and oil was leaking.

What we did

• Differential removed, dismantled and all parts cleaned
• Inspection: play on the pinion shaft, damaged shaft seal, oil leak
• Bearings and shaft seal replaced, the spare parts ordered for this
• Gear mesh adjusted, differential assembled, fitted into the axle housing and filled with oil
• Also found a crack in the axle housing: housing removed, cleaned, the crack welded and the weld painted
• Test drive after assembly

Result

The whole repair, including dismantling, cleaning, inspection, sourcing parts, assembly and adjustment, took three days.
